| We Remember Midge Calahan |
It was just a year ago that I met Midge Calahan. She came into the office and announced that there was already a Midge at the Art Alliance so I would have to be called something else. When I asked her how and when she got her name she replied, “I was always called Margie until I was 11 years old and went to a new boarding school. The headmistress said that they already had a Margie so from then on I was to be called Midge.” I told her that my real name is Madge but that I had been called Midge since the day I was born. She agreed that since I was a year older than she was, I got the name first so I could keep it. She said, however, “I am not going back to being Margie!!” The great article about Midge in the Boca Beacon stated that she was “competitive, generous, amazing and intense.” Her Art Alliance friends would also say that she was a great friend, she was a terrific imaginative artist, and she had a marvelous sense of humor. We deeply appreciate the gifts that have been sent to the Art Alliance in memory of Midge Calahan and know she would appreciate them too. Midge was one of the greatest supporters of the Boca Grande Art Alliance, both with her volunteer time and with her financial gifts and support. She will be long remembered and is greatly missed. |
